CtG Weeks 3-4: Tower of Babel, Fertile Crescent, Unification, Egypt

These two weeks for Bible/History we learnt about...
...the dispersion after the flood
...Ice Age, tower of babel
...Fertile Crescent (Ancient Mesopotamia)
...Unification of Egypt
...Life in Ancient Egypt and the Nile

Bible
We memorized the books of Old Testament (not all yet)

We used this song (from Wee Sing) to help us as well.

The Bentley Brothers always added lots of fun and laughter in our study of bible books. I wish they had songs on more books though.

This year I took time to read (taking turns) a verse from each book, I think it helped with flipping to the book.

My pastor taught us a real cool mnemonic for the minor prophets which I have been teaching the kids.

Hosea Just (Joel) Ate(Amos) Orange(Obadiah)
Jonah Might(Micah) Not(Nahum) Have(Habakkuk)
Zephaniah Has(Haggai) Zero (Zechariah) Money (Malachi)

History

We made cuneiform cookies. We used this site to get their names.

We did a dramatization of the Unification of Egypt. Always fun.

We made pyramids and compared how much sturdier they are than cubes.

We talked more about pyramids from this book
12703

We made rice crispy treat pyramids. =)

We made Egyptian necklaces with paper plates and macaroni.

The videos here explained the ice age, the flood, and dispersion well.

We did not do a new timeline. Instead I took out the accordion time line book we did before and showed them.

Science
We continued to learn about light and energy.

We did the blind spot experiment, and the balloon and bulb experiment.

Big Sis did the General Science Module 1 test on Virtual Homeschool Group and did well! It was a REALLY diffficult module, with so many names.

She went on to Module 2: Scientific Method.
She did some experiments and wrote good notes in her student book.

Other Subjects
Other than these, they continued to work on Math (Singapore, and Chalkdust for PreAlgebra), English (Rod and Staff), and writing.

This year, Big Sis is using Writing With Skill Level 1 independently.

Lil Sis is using Writing Strands 3

I made a digital copy for her to type in.

We also started Spelling Power for Lil Sis and Baby Sis is using Spelling by Sound and Structure.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
