2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 16/17

We had two weeks break. First we went to Maine for a really nice relaxing family vacation. Then we took another week off. This week, we are back! =)

Bible

We continue to memorize 1 Cor 13:1-8. We also did the readings on Luke.

History

This week we learnt about monasteries, the vikings, and life in medieval towns.

I added in Project Passport: The Middle Ages (Stop #4,6,8, 16, 20, and 21).

The illumination pages are really fun to do!

We wrote newspaper articles and advertisements.

We did lapbook components

We learnt about the town and the feudal system. We also learnt to play Nine Men Morris.

We started reading "The Princess and the Goblin" by George MacDonald. It is quite interesting!

Science

We finished up the lungs model and learnt about immunity as well as a little on genes.

Every week we still take a walk around our neighborhood and we spot differences in the surroundings.

We also read Book 2 of "God's Design for Sex" After that we had a lot of teaching and discussion on the topic of reproductive system. There isn't quite a need to linger on the topic of sexual intercourse, but we did talk about it, and to emphasize it is a gift for marriage and it is private, not for show.

It was really good to talk about how babies come about, the miracle of life, and the wonder of us.

Math Mammoth
I'm trying a new curriculum for my 6th grader. I am still trying to ascertain if it is a good fit for her.

Grade 8
Interestingly, Big Sis is learning about DNA, Chromosomes, and genetic code as well. I feel that the Masterbooks Biology was inadequate in this topic. It was very hard to understand what the author was trying to teach. Therefore I found some videos for her to watch. They are REALLY good! And then let her read the book again. It made a lot more sense.

The best ones I found was this Mr LeCornu (Aussie! ;P) and also the Amoeba Sisters from youtube.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
