1st Grade, Rome to Reformation Week 18: manuscripts, norsemen, muscles, promiseland

BIBLE

We memorized 1 Cor 12:6-8

We continued to read on Luke and the life of Jesus.

We also read the stories of how the monks wrote manuscripts and how the first translations of the Bible began.

For Lil Sis, she read about the story of Manna, 10 commandments and the spies to the promiseland.

She is getting better at her reading.

I really really like the Bible Reader. It is such a great way to teach the kids reading!!

HISTORY

We learnt about the Medieval monks and monasteries and the Norsemen(Vikings)

Using playdough to write their names in Viking Runes.

We started reading The Door in the Wall.

And we learnt chess from this app! =) It was real fun. We got it for free. Now it's $4.99.

LANGUAGE
The older kids continued on Rod and Staff English.

Lil Sis worked on her phonics, bible books and bible notebook
We learnt the sound "ow" for snow, and since Baby Sis is doing "Winter" unit for her preschool, Lil Sis spent a few days reading this book
Really good book for her level.

The older two continued on Lesson 7 åº·è»’一下 for Mandarin Chinese and Lil Sis did a lot of revision on bopomofo

We learnt two more Latin words "scriptum" and "ad" this week.
We did Spelling Power.

MATH
Lil Sis was doing graphs on Singapore Math 1B

SCIENCE
We learnt about the muscles this week
The "relaxed" muscle

The "contracted" (shortened) muscle

The biceps "relaxed"

The biceps "contracted" to bend the arm

we are ALL done with our anatomy model!!

Time to say bye bye. This is the best I could do to keep the model. Not the neatest I think.

ART
We had SOOOO much fun doing the illuminated Manuscript writing (I didn't think we would)
Big Bro's

Mommy's

Big Sis'

Lil Sis'. Lil Sis had such a great idea of using her glitter pens for the "illuminating" part. It turned out extremely well.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
