2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 30

This week we learnt about the Reformers.

We did some lapbook components on them. I dug out my Institute of Excellence in Writing (Andrew Pudewa) lessons that I got a few years ago and decided I'm going to start teaching writing in a different manner!! Now I'm listening to the lessons DVD by DVD (I'm almost half way).

For John Wycliff, I let Baby Sis paste the info about him on the lapbook.

For Lil Sis I worked with her using keywords.

For John Huss, we read the passage together and wrote the keywords together. If you know IEW, you can see the keywords.

Then they have to retell me the sentences they wrote from the keywords. They then wrote the piece out on their own.

For Martin Luther, I asked them to do the keywords on their own.

This was Baby Sis'

Then they retold the story to me and I typed them out. After that I asked them to do one dress up each. Lil Sis did a "who-which" and Baby Sis did a "ly" word.

We did the same for William Tyndale. I also asked them do do one dress up each. I think this is very helpful in helping them edit their writing!

This is Lil Sis'.

Big Sis did not go through the writing with me for I think she has done very well.

This is Lil Sis' work.

We also talked about Henry VIII and his wives. They really really enjoyed the"D,B,D. D,B,S" line. =)
Next week after our break, we will write about Henry VIII and I will use IEW method again, and ask them do continue to learn to do one dress up.

For Science we learnt about Uranus and Neptune.

We listened to a session by Leland Melvin, an astronaut, about Space and what astronauts do. I think it's more valuable than reading the chapter on Space Travel! This is a free session by Varsity Tutors.

Big Sis learnt about Kingdom Fungi this week

We "grew" some fungi.

And looked at it under the microscope. Except...I feel that I might have focused on the wrong thing?? I'm confused.=)
She did well for the unit anyway.

And, Sunday was Pi Day! (3/14) so we made a lemon meringue pie. =)

This is an acrylic painting Lil Sis did on a paint sample. I love it!

On a side note, Big Bro finished his Chemistry (Masterbooks)! That's huge! He did well, and scored a A- on it. I think it's a job well done.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
