1st Grade, Rome to Reformation Week 13: Constantine, Nicene Creed, Digestive System, Tower of Babel, Abraham

BIBLE

We memorized Rom 12:1-6

Lil Sis memorized Pr 12:18
The words of the thoughtless cut like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

We finished up Revelations and read some stories from Trials and Triumphs together with History.

We also learnt about the Nicene Creed.

For Lil Sis, she read the Tower of Babel story and the story of Abraham.

HISTORY

We learnt about Constantine and how the Roman Empire became Christian. Our children really literally breathed a sigh of relief when they heard that Christians were no longer persecuted. However, I could see that they were unsure about the wealth that was poured upon the Christians by Constantine.

We also read about Athanasius, Ambrose and Augustine.

Finally we listened to Story of the World about the Fall of Rome and how the tribes invaded.

We continued on Twice Freed.

To end off the study of Romans, we TRIED to have a Roman Feast. It has been difficult, so in the end, I thought, why not make it during snack time, than a meal!!

So we did. We had olives, cheese, fruits, "wine" (grapejuice) and *OOPS* crackers (because we didn't have the right bread).
To make sure they know we are not totally "authentic", we read up on the feasting of the Romans. This is from the book

And to get ready for the Middle Ages, we watched How to Train Your Dragon 1 and 2. =)

LANGUAGE
The older kids continued on Rod and Staff English.

Lil Sis worked on her phonics, bible books and bible notebook

The older two started Lesson 6 康軒一下 for Mandarin Chinese and Lil Sis practiced more of her bopomofo

We learnt two more Latin words "bracchium" and "corpus, corporis" this week.

We did Spelling Power.

MATH
Lil Sis continued to do worksheets on subtraction. She is getting independent on her Daily Calendar.

This Thanksgiving Folder Game was a fun game for her to practice addition and subtraction

SCIENCE

Our skeletons got guts! =)
The digestive system is so fun.

We got this from Staples some time back.

We talked about the peristalsis, using the straw experiment.

And we talked about nutrient groups and food groups. We used the worksheet from here

We also made a model of the stomach

And we did an experiment of crackers and soda to understand digestive juices. The leftover soda and crackers made this experiment so sweet of course. =)

ART
We did not do art this week.
