1st Grade, Rome to Reformation Week 10: Skeleton, Early Church

BIBLE

We continued to memorize Rom 12:1-2 and revised the Roman verses.

Lil Sis memorized Proverbs 12:26
Godly people are careful about the friends they choose.

We began the book of Acts and started the story of the church from the ascension of Jesus.

HISTORY

We read Bronze Bow and we will finish it next week.

We also started reading Galen and the Gateway to Medicine

LANGUAGE
The older kids continued on Rod and Staff English.

Lil Sis worked on her phonics, bible books and bible notebook

She reads so well on the bible reader!

The 6 days of Creation page

The older two learnt more of Lesson 5 åº·è»’一下 for Mandarin Chinese and Lil Sis learnt more bopomofo.

We learnt two more Latin words "urbs" and "digitus" this week.

We did Spelling Power.

MATH
Lil Sis started to do worksheets on subtraction.

SCIENCE

We made the skeleton models. The kids were a bit distressed that we made these coincidentally with Halloween. They did not want to be associated with it. The children at first were skirmish about the skeletons (I think it is the sad effect of Halloween and other dark spiritual connotations) and I had to remind them that this is not "ghostly" and "scary"; they are IN us that we can't see. Our skeletons are wonderfully and beautifully made by God!

My mom asked if I taught them the differences between female and male skeletons. I thought that was interesting. A little search online helped me find this

We started the bone experiment. I was VERY skirmish about a raw bone on my counter. I was not sure what to expect after 5 days (the smell I mean)

We learnt about the hinge joint

The pivot joint

The socket joint (we did find the brass brads in the end)

ART
We did not do any art this week.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
