2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 27

This week we learnt about Medieval India. The highlight was...we made Naan . =) I think I like naans better than chapatis, that's why. Always good to put things into the time-line and see where things are! We did a lapbook component on the Gupta Empire  The girls chose some questions and answers for the trivia envelope. We also watched a video of saris and I told them the story of how I learnt to wear the sari and the classical Indian dance for one performance in Secondary School. That was fun. Last day we talked about Christopher Columbus and started this lapbook component to be filled in later. Science We learnt about the space rocks. It was quite fun! Last week we actually watched the Mars Rover landing . It was really cool! We are "reading" Dangerous Journey through here . It is quite fun, though old. For 1 John, we are watching this series as a family, and I did bible study worksheets for the girls. I found it to be very inspiring and generated some discussions. 8th

2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 26

This week we learnt about medieval Africa. I made this lapbook component for the girls to write in after listening to Story of the World and also the reading from Streams. I really like this video that teaches on how the geography of Africa shapes its history. We also started a bible study on 1 John, using this materials . It is REALLY good! I'm planning to watch the sermon series with the girls and do the study (I made my own worksheets, simplified from this materials). For Science we finished up some projects we forgot to do last week for moon Got to love the Oreos Moon phases "craft"! Lapbook component We then learnt about Mars and made a lapbook component. We are also very excited to see that the rover Perseverance will be landing on Feb 18! Other things Big Sis finished her Kingdom Monera unit (using Apologia). I made worksheets for her and she reviewed it well, got 100% on the Apologia test. She will go on and finish all the kingdoms using Apologia materials (mainl

2020-2021 10th Grade Week 24

Haven't updated on our highschooler for a while. He had finished his half credit courses (Intro to Film and Personal Finance). Chemistry continued to be somewhat difficult at times. I tried to find videos for him (Khan Academy is very very helfpul). Then I was really excited to do the Titration Experiment! We used the purple cabbage solution I froze a year back. Still works. But the experiment did not. SO disappointed. I am not sure if we did it wrong, or the experiment design was poor. =( I have to say I am a little disappointed with Masterbooks Chemistry. I feel that they try to cramp too complex concepts (sometimes TOO complex) into too few pages. Then I had to find other ways to help him understand. Then the quizzes were asking a little too much. My personal opinion. Also we had a few blotched experiments, which I am rather disappointed about. Other than that, he is starting to do Experiencing God bible studies and I made him worksheets to write in instead of using the book.

2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 25

This week we learnt about the Ottoman Turks, Spain, and Portugal. It was a little confusing after the Black Death, nationalism, etc, why are we talking about the Ottoman Turks. However, it's very helpful when we go back to the Timeline pages (we do it by accordion style) That helps us to see where we are. We did a lapbook component using the lantern patterns that Muslims use during Ramadan. We also used this lapbook component for Ferdinand and Isabelle.  And when we studied about the explorers, we went to this page  under "Exploration and Trade" to try the "Spice Trader game". It was fun. For science, we did a lapbook component on the moon phases and also some things they remembered about the moon. By the way, this is my FAVORITE video on teaching the moon phases. She did it SO WELL. It was actually really fun because a few days before we saw the full moon. And since Chinese New Year is coming up in near to two weeks. I was able to explain to them the Lunar Cal
