Exploration to 1850 WEEK 4: Mayflower Pilgrims

This week we did Bible memory James 1:1-11.
It was great to revise nearly every lunch and after dinner. That is our family bible time.

This is the hymn we enjoyed these two weeks.

We learnt about the Mayflower, pilgrims, and Miles Standish.

The older kids did notebook pages on the pilgrims and we talked about the Mayflower compact.

Some books we read (they have good realistic photos):

We continued on this book.
We finished "Squanto".

This book is interesting (I forgot which week it was for). It helped the students (and teacher) learn about the kings and queens of England. It was a real mess and I had to research a while to understand which "Mary" was that "Mary", etc.

We continued with Spelling and Big Bro had his first English test for Rod and Staff.

We continued with Mandarin Chinese.

We did Lesson 11 on ferns. Our area is quite sunny and it was not easy to spot the ferns. I am hoping that maybe we will get to see some when we go hiking in September.

But we found this time lapse video really interesting.

And while we are on time lapse videos, the kids really love this one.

Also, we started our school for a couple days with this eye exercise videos, since two out of my four kids are wearing glasses now.

I intend to find some braingym exercises for them too.

We are using Artistic Pursuits K-3 (Book 2) this year.

This week we continued on Giotto and his fresco drawing.

The project for the week was really fun.
First we applied some thin spackling onto a piece of cupboard (we used cereal boxes).

Let dry.

Then we painted on it like a fresco. This was mommy's.

Exploration to 1850 WEEK 3: Jamestown

We began the memorization of James! This week we did James 1:1-8.

We did good! Even Baby Sis was able to memorize some words!

I tried this for one of the verses just for fun. The kids enjoyed it.

This is the hymn we enjoyed these two weeks.

We REALLY enjoyed this rendition. The kids remarked that the people are so joyful.

We learnt about King James, Jamestown, and the first pioneers.

These were some of the books in the book basket. I saw Big Sis reading it. I have not always known if book basket (putting a bunch of living books in the basket related to the topic) worked, but I have seen many times the kids just picked up a book or two they would not have picked up at the library and read with much interest.

The older kids did notebook pages on King James and Jamestown.

I found some images of the 1611 KJV version of 1 Cor 13 online and gave them as a page.

Lil Sis enjoyed making the wigwam.

We started read aloud this week.

The younger girls love this book. Big Bro already read this upteen times. He said "Squanto? We are reading it? But it's such a sad story!" =)

We started Spelling this week for the two older ones. They tested on Level H (Big Sis) and Level J (Big Bro). Lil Sis started Spelling by Sound and Structure from Week 1 and she is doing really well!

We continued with Mandarin Chinese.

We did Lesson 6 on leaves. We went out on a leaf search and it was really fun!!
Compound whorled leaves

Interesting dentate margins

Alternate compound leaves

WHAT IS THIS?!?! Some kind of fungus I think. They are hard! They sure look like roasted marshmallows.

We saw a HUGE leaf and talked about how much transpiration will go on in this tree!

Opposite compound leaves

Then we pressed the leaves they got and put them in laminate. Then I asked them to describe the leaves.

We are using Artistic Pursuits K-3 (Book 2) this year.

This week we learnt about Giotto (JAH-toh) and did some "scratch" art like he did when he was young.

First color the pastels.

Use oil pastel black to go over the whole picture.

Scratch the art. This was Mom's

This was Big Bro's

Big Sis.

They enjoyed the project.

Exploration to 1850 WEEK 2: Dutch, Spanish Explorations

We began the memorization of James! This week we did James 1:1-4.

Daddy came on board with us and we revised the verses everyday at Family Bible Time after dinner. It was really good!

We learnt about the Dutch Revolt, Spanish exploration of South America, and Mary, Queen of Scots

For my middle-schooler, he had to do more notebook pages (and more Math), while others did oral narrations. He also read more about Sir Walter Raleigh.
Got this globe at the homeschool conference. Thank you, Alpha Omega! And we used it as we read about history.

Big Sis and Lil Sis really enjoyed "American Pioneers and Patriots". We also read the North American Indians.

We made shortbread and had tea!
This recipe, though extremely vague for a recipe, is delicious!

We read this interesting story while talking about Netherlands.

We started with Rod and Staff English this week. We are using English 2,4,6. This is Lil Sis doing the book first time. She needed more help with the reading but she is doing really good!!

We also started with Mandarin Chinese this week.

We learnt about vascular plants and looked for them.

We talked about non-vascular plants and how they soak up water like a napkin.

Instead of Pokemon Go (no, we are not into that), we went in search of the different plants on our nature walk in this city.
We were observing moss
We found some non-vascular plants

Vascular gymnosperm

Vascular angiosperm

We are using Artistic Pursuits K-3 (Book 2) this year.
For the first project, we painted buildings in our neighborhood like Cimabue(Chee mah Boo eh)
