2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 8

We had another break week last week and here are some highlights of our week.

In our "touring the boroughs" project, we visited the Bronx, and this is the Verrazano Bridge. I love the bridges in NYC.

HAD to show the girls the aqueduct-turned-walkway, High Bridge, NYC, along the way. In case you are a history buff, and since we are learning about the Romans...here's the history of the high bridge.

We take walks around our neighborhood regularly in this pandemic. Mostly Wee Bro and I. However, on Sundays, I love the walks with the whole family. Thank God we have such a luxury in the city!

My friend recommended me this book and I'm learning a lot!

I got my 150 day streak in duolingo (espanol)! Actually I have learnt for longer than that, but never figured out the streak freeze function. =)

Bible
This week we memorized Romans 12:1
And we read more about Jesus' birth to growing up years.

This week, we go on to the emperors!

History
We learnt about the emperors after the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
We also learnt about the Crisis of the Third Century after the five good emperors.

We wrote some newspaper articles

More postcards. This one is from Emperor Vespasian to his son Titus, telling him about the need for taxes. So Big Sis drew a coin. =)

We talked about the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and this project is perfect for their lapbook. It's taken from the History Pockets. Instead of tissue, I found some feathers. The girls loved the creative idea.

We made a Trajan Column's replica (really fun! Except that mummy didn't realize that some of the pictures were the wrong-side up. oops)

Snacks in the column will be memorable...=)

Speaking about memorable. Mummy decided to make volcano bundt cakes for lunch. A little food coloring...yes, in the name of education. Remembering Mt Vesucius, which erupted during the time of Titus!

Another test for the Latin roots

Science

We learnt about hair, nails, and fingerprints.

And I did this fun project for the girls. I took thumbprints of everyone (almost) in the family and see if they can match the "criminal"'s print. =)
And we found that Goofball Goofy was trying to steal a caramel. =)

8th Grade

Big Sis learnt about osmosis and active transport. PHEW! It was quite a topic (especially active transport) to learn! She did well, with some research mummy did. She also did an experiment on osmosis.

Other things this week

One day I was feeling really uninspired for dinner. The kids were really quick in giving me suggestions and it ended up in an collaboration of every one chipping in. Big Sis and Baby Sis did the corn casserole while Lil Sis whipped up her signature mashed potatoes. I was in charge of main dish and veg. The boys took care of drinks.
It was such a fun dinner.

On certain days I would make bread and freeze them after some rising, and bake them in the morning. Fresh baked bread makes such great breakfasts.

This weekend our Borough Tour took us to....Queens! Home turf! We visited Fort Tottem, which we have not been. It was BEAUTIFUL!

The Fort is now taken over by Parks and Rec. The buildings are remarkable though. We had a good time.

Also we watched Jonah from Sight and Sound Theatres, free on TBN. We watched this show 9 years ago live. It was really great to watch it again. It was a wonderful reminder that we are free because of God's mercy and while there is always a Nineveh in us (a place we fear to go) God will give us enough strength.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
