MFW CtG/K Week 18: I-i Insect,Judges, speciallGideon and Samson

4th/2nd Grade Creation to the Greeks

Psalms 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

Bible/History
  • We talked about Judges and specifically the stories of Gideon and Samson
  • Read many times Psalms 23, memorized verse 4
  • We learnt so much from Gideon's and Samson's lives. How God used people who are not as "strong" as we think.
  • We also learnt about the people of the Canaan country (Hittites and Philistines)

And this is one of our FAVORITE videos of Judges. Our kids learnt the names of the judges just by this song!

Math/Science

  • Germination
We started by observing the seeds

After soaking

Putting in container

Learning about the embryo and cotyledons

The kids even found the "embryo" during lunch while they ate edamame! So cool

All well...until...our seeds didn't grow. I thought it was my black thumb. Apparently it's way too cold to grow. OH WELL...

Language

  • Rod and Staff
  • Spelling Power for Big Bro
  • Spelling by Sight and Structure for Big Sis

Have you wondered?

Kindergarten:I-i Insect

thumbprint ants

SO FUN!

The books wer read

The Ant and Grasshopper Story, printables from here (we're planning to use these for the other Aesop Fables we're going to read)

And here's our ant farm over the three weeks.
First EXCITING DAY!

All of them congregating below and getting used to the farm.

The beginning of work

All the sand they piled up

Sleeping as a huddle

The "invisible tunnel"

The Samson Ant

Traffic jam, what do they do?

Oops. First Casualty. The fellow carried his dead comrade's body around for the entire day!

More tunnels!

FOOD!

Look at that!

Piled up sand and more dead bodies

All the dead bodies piled in a corner.

They are mostly dead by now, left a few hardies.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
