New School Year 2021-2022: Week 1

And here we go. =) 2 Highschoolers, 1 middle schooler, 1 elementary schooler, and one 3 year-old prepper. =)

This is our school set up this year.
The younger girls at the dining table. We got our first whiteboard after 11 years of homeschooling. Hmm...

Their books (English/Math/binders) are in boxes under our living room mantlepiece/cabinet.

This is a table at the living room, and on one side is my computer, and on the other, Big Sis's school table. I got this table-top bookends and I think they work really well.

Big Bro gets the small table under the loft in the kids' room.
We (all seven of us) live in a 900 sq ft 2-bedroom apartment in NYC. We have to try creatively to work around this space that God gave us.

Our first day tradition includes a nice breakfast. This year it's dunkin' donuts, bagels, and fruits.
And I made them bubble tea. =) The youngest two had smoothies.

HISTORY

We memorized the pledge of allegiance.

We learnt about the explorers, mainly Leif Ericsson and Christopher Columbus, We used the IEW method to work out some paragraphs. For week 1, we learnt about Leif Erikson. The girls then made digital notebook pages.
I used google docs for the girls so that I can see their writing and make comments along the way.
Here are the final products.

Lil Sis' pages.

Baby Sis' pages

OTHER WORK:

Baby Sis doing Math.

Lil' Sis Earth Science note pages. I also made some quick (3-5 questions) google quizzes for her.

Spelling (we usually start at week 3). Baby Sis REALLY wanted to start this week.

Rod and Staff English

Chalkdust Prealgebra.

BIG SIS (9th grade)

Her first highschool day! These are the things she did this week:
Apologetics materials from New Answers Book (or the webite)
Geometry (Easy Peasy)
Bible: made chapter keywords after speed reading the OT

She is listening to audiobook at times too for this.

We printed these pages(Workbook) from The Homeschool Printing Company. So reasonably priced. But I'm glad we got them on single side. The paper were not thick.

For fun, this was an embroidery Big Sis finished this week.

BIG BRO (11th grade)

American History (Guesthollow)
He also did Algebra II from Yay Math, Government (iCivics and Crash Course)
And SAT prep (Khan Academy, Princeton)
This is an example of an iCivics activity sheet that he did digitally.

PREPPER:
I got some materials for him. Like this sticker book and these dot markers. It's not for "school" per se, just to keep him occupied while we learn, but he's learning tons from not doing "school".

LOVE this book. My 3rd child to use it.

Big Sis and Baby Sis made him some games.

But I did find these two apps that I REALLY like for pre-preschoolers. First Duolingo ABC, and also Khan Academy Kids. Really well-done and relevant. We use duolingo for foreign language, so it's so fun for Wee Bro to see the same owl. =) He doesn't do a lot of ipad, but a little every other day.

Then we celebrated the first week done!
All in all, I think we did really well for the first week. =)

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
