MFW CtG/K Week 26: R-r Rock, Elijah/Elisha

4th/2nd Grade Creation to the Greeks

Psalms 1

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Bible/History

  • We read on Elisha's calling and end of Elijah's life
  • We also continued on Homer and had a really great laugh when we read how Odysseus was blown away by the wind RIGHT when he was SOOOO near to home
  • We read and talked about Hinduism and Buddhism (and on India's Caste system)

Math/Science

  • Day 5 of Creation (Swimmers and Flyers)
  • We learnt about Osmosis

The potatoes pieces fit perfectly in cookie cutter

Submersion in different waters

The one in the salt water

The one in the fresh water
  • So we learnt that osmosis is the process whereby water is drawn to the solutes. And that fish in freshwater urinates more because of the amount of water going into their body.
  • I know osmosis (kind of). I did an experiment on osmosis a long time ago in Secondary School (Junior High)...what was it again?!? And I have NO IDEA what it was. Now I do. ha. RE-EDUCATION everyday.

Osmosis and Diffusion
Next. Egg in vinegar. After the night, the shell dissolves away and I was awed.

Blue Dye

Osmosis brought the water (with the dye) through the semi-permeable membrane and made the egg blue

Place in freshwater

Diffusion. Solutes travel to where more solvent is. HA. Never knew that. Scientifically at least.

This show the osmosis process

I had so much fun.

Big Sis is a real character. And mind you, she did not waste any bit of time even with all these....gizmos...

Language

Only Big Sis will make stains into pictures.

  • Rod and Staff
  • Spelling Power for Big Bro
  • Spelling by Sight and Structure for Big Sis
  • Cursive for Big Sis. I write a paragraph for her and she will copy it in cursive.

Foreign Language

We finished 康軒一上!!

They learnt 85 new words (read and write) and they learnt a ton of vocabulary.
I am very proud of them.
I realized they are very good at learning new words, but they are poor in utilizing them. So the next step, we'll improve of usage! =)

Art/Music

Art took a rest this week.

Have you wondered?

Kindergarten:R-r Rock

What do you do when your alphabet cards are in a mess? Sing the A-a Apple song and let the child pick the letters as a revision. Best way to tidy up.

Crystals making!! (I bought a kit from the Dollar Store)

Add chemicals (according to package...sounds so scary)

Add rock

Add mix
Next day.
About few days. Not that pretty like the package...

Bottom.

We used the stamping set to do some R words

Read some books

Used the stamp to find words

Asked child to write the beginning letter on top of other words

Rock painting!

And we watched some really fun videos!!

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!
