2020-2021 Rome to Reformation Week 1

A glimpse of our school area now. The girls sit around the dining room

Behind the dining table there is a stationery trolley. Big Sis and Lil Sis have their English and Math books there.

Big Bro and Big Sis have their books in the living room cabinet.
We recently upgraded the living room table to a large one. So two can sit there for school. Makes a HUGE difference since daddy is working from home now (that mean Big Bro lost his work-in-our-room privilege)
This is an upgrade too! I get a monitor screen that swivels, so I use that to teach the girls (powerpoint slides and videos). It's really good! By the way, that's almost the entire of our apartment (not showing the tidy kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom) =) This is our school space!

And we are OFF to "tour" Ancient Rome! I love this idea that we are "tourists" of Ancient Rome, picking up stories, snaphots, souvenir, events along the way.

For Bible, we are going through this book this week.
How the Bible Came to Us by Meryl Doney

We are using Project Passport: Ancient Rome for many of our learnings and projects.
But we also add in some readings/projects from MFW's RtR.

Stop # 1: Founding of Rome

Map and people groups of early Italy

Map of Roman Lands Now

We made the Romulus and Remus lapbook
Never knew putting some pepper (over glue) will give you a "fur effect". Interesting!

The girls' narration of the story of Romulus and Remus. Different levels! I want to do more CM style narration this year.

We learnt about the 7 first kings of Rome, starting with Romulus.

Stop #2: The Roman Republic
I used the timeline we did the last round, to show the girls that when Rome became a republic, Persia was still the superpower.

We learnt about how the Roman republic came about, the Roman caste system, and the mixed constitution of the Roman Republic government.

We started the first newspaper article on the plebeians' strike. The girls really enjoyed the writing. It was great fun!

We added snapshots to the "timeline"

We really like this idea of "snapshots".
We then listened to one of the audio files (the audio story is really well done!) about one of the legends in here:

SCIENCE
Overview of Human Body.

We did a human body book. This is from this book. (We got it long ago for free)

Cells
I used jello and a grape in a bag to show the simple model of a cell.
We learnt structure of cell and also different cells of the body.

The girls had a unit quiz on the overview.

And...we made cupcakes to celebrate the finishing of this week!
Or rather, the girls did. It's amazing that it's only a couple years' difference, and I have children baking, cooking, independently, complete with cleaning up too. I love to see their growth!

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!

Science 2015/2016: Human Body Recap

We really had fun learning about the Human Body this year. I thought it would be meaningful to consolidate our learning. We enjoyed the Body Book more than I thought we would. I did do most of the cutting though. We also enjoyed the different videos we watched and the experiments. I think this is the most successful science year yet.
