1st Grade, Rome to Reformation Week 1: Founding of Rome, Roman Republic, Punic Wars

Yahoo! A new year!

BIBLE

We learnt about the how the books of the bible can be grouped and that the Bible was written by many different people through a long period of time.

We read from How the Bible Comes to Us.

An important question that Big Bro asked that we will keep searching for a good answer is that "How do you know the Bible was REALLY written by THOSE people over THAT many years?" (and not someone made it up)

This is interesting because for it coincide perfectly with 1st Grade.

HISTORY

We read this book and learnt about the Roman numerals

This book has good information about how the Romans do school.

We learnt about the founding of Rome, how Rome became a republic and the punic wars.

This map is very helpful to understand the places in this period, so I printed it and put it on the table.

The kids drew Roman Lands today, and also Hannibal's Route.

We started Augustus Caesar's World and I find it helpful to have the pages of "characters" (in the book) ready while I read and also write down some big words, like "Appolonia", "astrologer" etc.

We watched two very funny and informative videos about a life of a teen in Roman Times and the lives of the girls. too.

We were going to get some snacky lunch and have a picnic outside (since the Romans often did not cook in the apartments they live in), but it rained...so we "went" to Cafe Dormitia instead.
(however, I do not think they had edamame, sushi rolls and potatoes...)

Got these books in the basket this week.

LANGUAGE
The kids were very excited to start on their Rod and Staff books. They have grown to like the routine of the books.

We did the placement tests for spelling power.

For Big Bro, he was placed at the level where he stopped, so it's good! And Big Sis was placed in the same level as Big Bro when he started SP in 3rd Grade! How interesting...

We also started our Mandarin Lesson and Lil Sis was DELIGHTED to start learning about BoPoMoFo.

Lil Sis revised her alphabet this week.

MATH
Big Bro continued on Singapore Math 4B (which he was not not able to finish in the summer) and Big Sis started 3A.

I decided to not use Complete Book of Math for Lil Sis this year, but to start her on Singapore Math 1A, but I got many worksheets online as her practice. We also got the relevant living books from the booklist.

This is Lil Sis's Daily Calendar which I got from here and here.

I got this idea from a mom of the MFW group. It's brilliant. Instead of beans on the popsicle stick, we use beads on pipe cleaners to count the days.

SCIENCE
We learnt about the cell this week.

ART
We drew Hannibal's War Elephants from Draw and Write Through History

Ahem. The kids got creative.

Online Resources: Sesame Street Games

I love the Sesame Street Games ...I think they are the best for preschoolers. They teach important concepts, at the same time, making computer skills real easy. For eg, there is no "click and drag"...that's hard for them...there's "click" "move" "click". There are some games Ian really likes...(click on photo for the games) That's the Wheels on the Bus song (you press the keys foe interactive movements) Patterns. Seasons. Fun for the kids. Walking the dogs...numbers. This is alltime favorite. First you make a pitcher of lemonade. Then depending on how many monsters come, you click however many cups. I love it!
